The construction of the Basilica of Sacre-Coeur

always the legend says that the beautiful Church of the Sacre-Coeur in Paris was built to atone for the uprising of the Commune of 1871. The real reasons that led, in 1870 (then a year before), the decision to eregi a church on the hill of Montmartre was simply provide the city with a sacred temple for the worship of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and in so doing, to demonstrate their hostility to the Republic by proclaiming a call to choose the religion as a guide and not politics.
The choice of the church on the highest hill in Paris was, in fact, not random. From here you can see and control the entire city.

For the construction of the church played a regular competition, which had among the members of the jury, the architect Charles Garnier (inventor of the Opera) and sixty-eight candidates vicintore between the architect Paul Abadie.
a project was proposed in the Roman-Byzantine style, inspired by Hagia Sophia in Constantinople in San Marco in Venice. The first stone was laid October 16, 1875.
Unfortunately, due to the fragility of the land consists of hollow Gypsum, Abadie was forced to design an enormous work of excavation for the foundation. They were well dug 83 wells 33 m deep, filled with concrete and connected by arches. This underground facility convinced many to say that the church was in support of the Butte Montmartre, not the other.
In 1878 work began in the crypt (with an area equal to that of the basilica) and in 1881 began the work of the church.
The facade is in limestone of Chateau-Landon, which, alone, with bleach with over the years and contact with rainwater.
Paul Abadie died in 1884 and he was succeeded by five other architects who seek to maintain the original design. The last architect Jean-Louis Hulot complete the bell tower el 'sculptural apparatus of the basilica.
The church is 85 m long and 35 wide. In the pediment, in a niche, you can see the statue of Jesus that shows his heart (the statue was designed by Gustave Michel).
the foot of the porch two equestrian statues of Hippolyte Lefebvre representing Joan of Arc and St. Louis, a symbol of holiness and justice, one brandishing his sword, the other the crown of thorns.

The church houses the famous bell Savoyarde, whose real name is Margaret Frances. This is the biggest bell in the world, at least among those which may fluctuate. It weighs 19 tons.
E 'was donated by four dioceses of Savoie at Annecy in 1895 and merged the company Paccard, whose fame dates from this period. The company Paccard had found the secrets of the old Flemish founders of the Middle Ages to provide internal harmonization of the bells sound.
Carried by 28 horses, arrived in town the night of October 16, 1895. With great difficulty was brought on the bell tower and since 1969 the company are four other bells Félicité, Louise, Elizabeth Nicole et.
